QA mode test — how do I lazy-load images in WordPress?

Question

I want to lazy-load all images in my theme without a plugin. What is the best filter to use?

Amaka · Accepted Answer

The best filter is wp_img_tag_add_loading_attr — it adds loading=lazy to every img tag the_content outputs.

Chidi · Answer

Use the native loading="lazy" attribute — WordPress adds it automatically since 5.5 via wp_lazy_loading_enabled().

Tunde · Answer

You can also hook into the_content and run preg_replace on img tags, but native is cleaner.
